The First Taste of an Idea

The Big Cheese started with a simple idea: to create a neighbourhood cheese shop celebrating brilliant artisan cheese, the people who make it, and the simple pleasure of eating and sharing something really good.

After years in the corporate world, Neil fancied doing something a little different. Something of his own. Something fun, creative and firmly rooted in the Edinburgh community he calls home.

And so, The Big Cheese was born.

A friendly, independent cheesemonger where you can wander in, have a taste, ask questions and discover something new. Our cheese gallery is filled with exceptional cheeses from Scotland and beyond, alongside local accompaniments, freshly baked bread and all the good things that make cheese even better.

Whether you know exactly what you’re looking for or haven’t the foggiest where to start, we’re here to help you find something you’ll love — and tell you a little about the people, places and stories behind it.

Come in for a taste. Leave with a new favourite. And, quite possibly, a very good reason to come back.

Inside the window, Display shelves with cheeses and bakery items are visible, along with posters and signs promoting products and tasting events. Two metal bollards are outside the entrance, and a chalkboard sign is placed on the sidewalk.

Mia

Head Cheesemonger & Store Manager

Mia’s career in cheese began more than ten years ago. Since then, she’s built a wealth of experience in specialist cheese retail and developed a deep love for farmhouse cheese and artisan produce. Many of her favourite cheeses are goat's milk, and she is keen to advocate for Scottish cheese and Scottish produce.

At The Big Cheese, Mia leads our ever-evolving selection, championing small-scale cheesemakers and seeking out exciting new producers, flavours and styles for our customers to discover.

Neil

After years in the corporate world, Neil decided it was time to do something a little different — something more hands-on, more personal and rooted in the community he calls home. A lifelong love of great food, independent businesses and the people behind them eventually led him to cheese, and to opening The Big Cheese: the kind of neighbourhood cheesemonger he wanted on his own doorstep.

At The Big Cheese, Neil is passionate about creating a warm, welcoming space for customers to discover exceptional cheeses, whether they’re popping in for a chat, building a cheeseboard or simply looking for a great piece of cheese.
